NEGC recently announced the launching of its 2008-09
Capital Campaign coinciding with the purchase of land to build two
new state-of-the art buildings on 2.2 acres of Conner at
Charlevoix, the Clubhouse along with a new adult services
facility.
The Chalmers building,
which NEGC has owned and occupied since 1977, is a two-story
15,000 sq. ft. brick building with a basement serving as a
commercial kitchen where meals are prepared and served by
consumers.
Only 10,000 sq. ft. are usable and even after many
renovations the environment is hazardous.
A feasibility study funded by LISC identify further repairs
were expensive and would do little to improve the building’s
appearance.
Due to its inadequate condition, NEGC explored several
options for improving the environment for our consumers.
NEGC’s land purchase demonstrates its commitment to
conserve.
The Clubhouse is the only one of its kind on the eastside
of Detroit, and provides a clear benefit to mentally ill adults
and their families.
This pairing of newly
constructed, energy efficient sites will dramatically improve
access to services, and quality of services.
Consumers will be able to walk from building to building
for the diversity of programs needed for their recovery.
Most importantly, the Motor City Clubhouse will have its
own separate facility as required by federal guidelines. The
Clubhouse features would include:
meeting spaces, a Canteen, small and large group meeting
rooms for AA meetings, nutrition, and other groups, a commercial
kitchen for preparing meals and conducting the culinary arts
courses, a library and computer room.
The Employment and Housing Initiatives started this spring
also to be housed in the Clubhouse will assist
consumers in obtaining and maintaining employment consistent with
their vocational goals and recovery.
The
Adult/Administration Services building will consolidate offices
currently housed in the Adult Services building and the Samaritan
Center. Other
programs to be placed on the campus include the Dual Diagnosis
Intensive Outpatient Program and Assertive Community Treatment.
Hamilton Anderson & Associates (HAA) has been selected
as the architect and is a leader in “green” building with
recent experience in the building of the Detroit High School of
Performing Arts and the Youthville Detroit facility.
